Welcome to my signature page. There's a reason that I don't call this my "home page". I've been told that, linguistically speaking, my argument doesn't hold water. I agree, but I hope you get my point anyway.
You may think that my pages look boring. There's a reason for that, too.
I'm no longer an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin. After an unspecified amount of time, I completed my degree in Computer Science (a BS, and I definitely think so, too) in December 1996. I also finished a degree in Japanese (though it may officially be something like "African and Oriential Languages and Literature", it was only in one language, with no literature) in May 1997. I eschewed the traditional Asian Studies minor in favor of (you guessed it!) CS.
When I tell people what I've done, the reaction is almost invariably something like, "Oh, that's great! A really smart business move! Oh yeah, especially since the Japanese and technology and blah blah blah..."
If you would be one of those people, please read the following very carefully.
I LEARNED JAPANESE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO READ THEIR COMIC BOOKS AND WATCH THEIR CARTOONS. THAT'S *ALL*.
I'll mention now that after I graduated, I was hired as a programmer for IBM in Austin. I thought I didn't want to be a programmer, but that's basically just a title for me. I spend most of my time helping my manager meet some of his personal business commitments. I do that by having as much fun as I can. This fun does not usually involve using Japanese, but I suppose it could.
(Look, I have used a blink tag in anger. Maybe you do not want to come back now, yes?)
I now work for Sun Microsystems, working on
systems that aren't very micro. I like it.
Now, for the truly curious or just plain bored, I'll offer up some personal information.
In my limited free time (I spend a lot of time working at having fun), I do a very little bit of CGI scripting. Up to now, all of my scripts are in Perl, which is my language of choice for munging text and things like that. I don't expect that to change much.
Please send any questions or comments to cloyce@headgear.org. I'd love to read them.
By the way, here's some dynamic content to foil caching schemes, etc. I do this not because I don't like you, but just because I feel like being contrary. Besides, Zippy is always funnier than an access counter. Right now, Zippy sez:
