On the road trip in we saw some amazing damage to power lines and roads due to the recent flooding in late August 2002. There were large high tension towers bent over and covered in grass and junk washed in by the floods. Some had to be supported by cables attached to heavy stone blocks by the side of the road so they wouldn't fall.
We also passed a number of hops fields on the way in. Hops and Malt are key ingredients in the brewing of beer. The Czechs, like the Germans, like their beer and they make some of the best in the world. One of the most famous (and strongest) Czech beers comes from the town of Budvar, known as "Budweis" in German. Yes, this renowned beer is where Mr. Busch got the name "Budweiser" for the most popular American beer. However it's rather a misnomer because the American version is nothing like the Czech Budvar, which has more body, more taste, and more alcohol!
Most of this scenery on the road in I videotaped but didn't get any still photos. Since this page contains just my digital photos for now, in the future I may get some framegrabs off my video of the things I've described here and add them to this page. Note that most of the informational text on the following pages in this collection is from the book Prague - A Pictorial Guide to the Historic City, 2nd Edition, published by Artfoto Publishers Prague, 1999 (which I picked up in a souvenir shop across from the Town Hall while on our tour...)
