I don't know why this picture came out somewhat blurry.l Above and to the right of the astronomical clock is the figure of Death, who symbolically tolls the bell because he will come for everyone. Across from Death are figures of a miser and vain profligate, symbolizing that Death will come for the rich and the young and beautiful as well.
The astronomical clock itself is a marvel for its time. It shows the year, month, day, and hour, the rising and setting of the sun, the phases of the Moon, and the current phase of the Zodiac. A peculiarity is that the Earth is in the center and the sun revolves around it, though one would expect this view of the universe before the Copernican heliocentric system took hold. And of course what is at the center of the picture of Earth, but the city of Prague!
It's amusing, incidentally, to view this peculiarity in light of the fact that on the way to the square here from the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge, we also passed a residence of the astronomer Johannes Kepler (or it may have been a museum, I'm not sure). Of course Kepler is the one who determined from the observations of Tycho Brahe that the planets move in elliptical orbits and determined the relationship between orbital period and its size. And these observations later allowed Isaac Newton to formulate the fundamental law of gravitation!
