This is the front gateway to the Prague castle, parts of which date back as far as 880 - 890 AD. It has been built and modified by many rulers of the region, from Charles IV of Bohemia (ruled 1346 - 1378), Vladislav Jagellon (ruled 1471 - 1516) whose Vladislav Hall is still used for key state events including the election of the President of the Czech Republic, through Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (mother of Marie Antoinette), who rebuilt sections of the Castle after the wars for Hapsburg succession damaged it.
