We made a brief stop in what we are told was the oldest town in Germany (based on references to it in ancient Roman documents). The oldest relic of the town's Imperial Roman past is the Porta Nigra, this millenia old town gate, which in the Middle Ages was used as part of a church. The final photo here is a plaque which reads:
PORTA NIGRA
North Gate of the Imperial Roman City, built in the 2nd Century after Christ. The biggest and best preserved City Gate of the Roman Empire. From 1035 to 1800 this was the Church of Saint Simeon.
