This is the front facade of the Frauenkirche or "Church of Our lady" facing the old town market square. According to this website, this church is he first hall-church in Franconia and was built from 1352-1358 as a donation of Kaiser Karl IV. In 1509 the original clock was replaced by an ornate art clock called the Männleinlaufen, which is designed as a reminder of the "Golden Bull" regulating the election of the King by the German Prince Electors. At noon the clock tolls and the seven electors (Kurfürsten) honor Karl IV, who is on a throne in the middle of the carillon.
It is especially amazing to see how this church looks today when one sees how badly it had been damaged during the Allied bombing in World War Two. At the bottom of this page there are several photos of the chutch and the market square at the end of the war.
