Neuschwanstein is probably the most famous castle in the world. Its beautiful spires and romantic mediaeval look inspired Walt Disney for the look of Cinderella's Castle. But this castle was no Middle Ages fortress. This was built by "Mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria between 1868 and 1886! Yes, Abraham Lincoln had been dead for over three years before this castle was even started!
Regrettably we only had a very brief stop here at the gift shop at the base of the mountain. You can't drive up to the castle, you must either walk or take a carriage. And things were made worse by the fact that there was nearly impenetrable fog that day. I managed to get these two hazy pictures when the fog thinned just enough to even allow the castle to be seen.
