This is the great monument to Johann Sebastian Bach in front of the Thomaskirche, where Bach spent the last 20 years of his life and where he composed works including the St. Matthew Passion and the B Minor Mass. I have wanted to see this statue and this great church ever since hearing organ virtuoso Virgil Fox on the Bach Live at Winterland album. Track 5 is the Cantata No. 29 Sinfonia, which he prefaces with a rhapsodic discussion of his visit to this very spot, which for a great organist is something of a place of pilgrimmage.
