In front of the Friederichsbau, there is a courtyard terrace which affords a beautiful view of the river Neckar and the roofs of old Heidelberg. Even though it was starting to rain at this point I was able to get this great picture. I agree with the description of this view found here:

Behind Friedrich's Palace, this Belvedere was added in 1610 and nowadays attracts visitors by the hundred. The view over Heidelberg's sea of roofs, the Holy Ghost Church, and the Old bridge across the river Neckar is unforgettable.

Yet there is a second attraction, the Rittersprung (knight's jump): a boot-shaped impression in a sandstone paving. The story goes that during the conflagration of the Friedrich's Palace, a knight, dressed in full armour, jumped through the window - and not only did he survive, but left a print of one of his boots. Tradition has it that whoever sets foot in this imprint will undoubtedly return to Heidelberg.
