Here's a long view of Heidelberg castle from the base of the mountain. Contrary to what many people assume, the damage to many parts of the castle does not stem from World War Two bombing. It is from much earlier, from the siege during the Thirty Years War. Of course, after climbing up the long cobblestoned slope from the Kornmarkt square to the castle (which I was dragging myself up by the end), I have to be amazed that Count Tilly didn't take one look at the thing, decide it wasn't worth it, and just pack up and go home.

The castle wasn't all built at one time. New palaces were added over its more than 300 years of construction. Over time it developed from a mediaeval fortress into a Renaissance palace. The buildings in the central courtyard reflect the tastes of several different Prince Electors who developed the castle and their diverse tastes in building styles.
